I think in popular music in the 50s many bands had saxophones for lead and
then in the 60s this changed to electric guitar. I think those
registrations above play a similar role. But also when you look at Hammond
registrations in general (some here
http://www.acesandeighths.com/Zips/Presets.doc) this seems to back it up,
and they are close to popular stops on pipe organs. The percussion adds a
chiff like on some pipes when they first speak.
Contra Saxophone 16' 867 100 000 very close to 88 8000 000.
Contra Trombone 16' 688 710 000 very close to 88 8800 000/68 8600 000,
or electric guitar
Tuba Chorus 848 888 885 very close to 88 8888 888/full organ
The unnatural ones outside of what a pipe organ can produce for me are:
88 8000 008 often used to comp and easy to select by turning off the
percussion
80 0000 008
80 0008 888 used for squabbling
86 4212 468 something like this used on live version of No Woman, No Cry
Maybe we should have a competition to find the weirdest registration.
