Subject:Re: NUMA organ questions / There IS room for improvement....
Steve Hayes has just informed me that my statement about wanting a
clone that does not require spendy outboard gear "does not hold much
water here" because "we have done the test". He is basically saying ( I
assume) that when you remove the A0 -28 preamp from a B-3 , the sound
will deteriorate significantly.
I would have to disagree with that point. I have heard plenty of
Hammond chops with Trek II solid state preamps that sounded JUST FINE
and I would probably be able to come up with any number of Hammond
experts that could say the same.
This gets back into an old debate regarding the tube vs.solid state
issue. I have heard and played the latest incarnation of the new B-3
and I have also heard a Key B Duo . I think they both sound very good.
In each case there was not as speck of tube preamplification in sight.
A lot of people here are using Ventillators. Many have commented on how
much it warms up the sound, and how much they like it etc. Lst time I
checked it was still....solid state.
So all I am saying is that when a clone comes along that has it all in
one package, that is the one I am going to buy. And until then I am not
going to spend a bunch of money on magic bullets to try to make what is
currently out there better.
If anything , there is an issue about running Hammond clones through
speakers that were never designed for them. The typical super high
frequency horn driver is going to show up issues from a digital source.
The high crossover point is going to be a factor too. Many people I am
sure experience a similar thing with trying to reproduce digital pianos.
It's no big deal, but I get slightly offended when someone tells me
that my request for an all in one package "does not hold water".
