Subject:Re:VK8m tone control/ How did I miss this thing?

I saw a PBS special a few months ago with (the current lineup of) the
band 'War'. Their keyboardist who I believe is named Lonnie Jordan
was playing a Roland VK-8. He was getting what I thought were very
authentic tonewheel console/Leslie sounds from it. I watched and
didn't see a real Leslie anywhere. So my assessment of the Roland
VK-8/m and it's internal Leslie sim. is: it's no slouch! I think if
money was no object probably all of us would love to get a Ventilator,
but in today's economy the reality for many is, cash is an issue as we
have to budget etc. I suppose it's good practice anyway to get to
learn what our keyboards are capable of by adjusting the parameters
and/or reading the manual. I agree with what others have said about
Hammond-Suzuki's XK-3c user manual; it's pretty sucky and their way of
explaining quite a few features comes across as confusing. In such
cases I usually just dive in and learn by doing, instead of trying to
wrap my brain around what may be a futile exercise in re-reading, and
still not 'getting' what they're describing.
(Your mileage/manual-reading frustration may vary. Mine might be due
to all the splitting/assigning/controlling options that the XK-3c
model has).
