I shipped a new yamaha P60 88 key piano from japan on the plane with me in
its own factory box except cut down closer to actual size of the board without
the styro and wrapped the keyboard in bubble wrap. it made the flight with no
problems. maybe because it was coming from japan and they are notorious for
doing things right in everything they do. Northwest Airlines has large overhead
bins. i was able to take a Martin HD28 in a hardshell case on board and put it
in the large bins all the way across the pacific from California. It depends
on what airline you take and they all have their policies. If you're that
paranoid about it, get a hard case for it and be done with it. The weight may be a
problem but depends on weight limits to where you're going and what airline.
