Subject:MS KP-200S or 2 KT-80's or keep Roland KC-300's
I've been looking at all the info I can find on the MS amplifiers for
my stereo piano and other synth (non-organ) sounds. I've been using
a pair of stereo-linked Roland KC-300's which, other than tightening
a few buzzing screws the past couple of years, I like just fine for
medium size club venues. The volume and sound reproduction is great
down into the bass for piano LH or synth bass with plenty of mids and
highs. My main complaint is their 39 lb weight and cabinet size on
top of my MS leslies - no other place for a stereo pair to go.
I'm kind of interested in the KP-200S which would let me shed one amp
in my setup; I could put it behind me. The power output at 100 watts
per side would be about the same, and the stereo 3D spatial expander
could (?) be a nice effect. I already have an extremely good 3D
spatial expander in an RCA 10-band EQ unit I have mounted in a rack
shelf that I use sometimes - but I wouldn't have to set it up using
the KP-200S. These amps are heavy though at 55 lbs with a big
footprint cabinet. And somehow 10" speakers, even though they're
Eminence Beta's, leave me with doubts about the low end which was
mentioned in some posts.
I just came across some info and a review about the MS KT-80 amp and
searched the CWSG archives for all the old posts. The newer version
with 100 watts RMS, Beta-12 woofer and horn driver, seems like it
should be pretty loud - with a pair of KT-80's potentially equal to
my Rolands or a KP200S, unless there's something in the smaller
cabinet design that prevents this. Some posts said they were OK for
stage monitors, rehearsal, but not enough output for performance.
The specs read otherwise, but...
I'd appreciate some group feedback comparing these amps - I know
players either like or hate Roland KC's, so that's a given. TIA ~ Wj
