Ok!!
I bought a working Odyssey for $150 in 1983. The salesman said you
really want that???...here is the DX-7.
This is what you WANT.
Nope.
It was quite a condescending experience and he was enjoying every minute
of trying to get this "clueless chick" to buy a DX-7. He thought he was
selling me junk......little did he know, LOL!!
I used it to learn behind what goes into editing sounds etc...rather
than settle for patch 9 being "good enough" like a lot of lazy
keyboardists I have heard locally. I even got a steady gig with a
corporate band once JUST for having the right sound and playing "1999"
correctly. Not a big deal, but I heard every local cover band play it in
1999 and NONE of them had the right sound (patch 9 is "good enough") not
to mention not even playing the proper part!!!
Can you imagine a guitarist playing the "Smoke on the Water" riff wrong
and trying to let it pass for "good enough". Some of us take pride in
our work, even if it is playing schlock!
Also, now all the folks who told me to get rid of "all that junk" drool
over the stuff. ..and I say, "too bad, it's not for sale!!"
I knew I would be right on this one and did not relent!! However, I
bought the new synth gear too, once sample playback synths were popular
and the strings sounded smooth or at least sounded like a Mellotron..or
could come close;-)
And I own a DX also. Bought it for what it is worth about 3 years ago.
$275..... If I want a "Rhodes" sound, I wasn't gonna pay $1400 for that
back then and have banks and banks of crap that would make me cringe and
makes faces as I was playing the notes on a gig.
I have thousands of DX patches. I like about 50 of them. A steady diet
of FM is not my idea of what I want to hear. (and that goes for allot of
FM radio too!!)
Plus it isn't a real Rhodes unless you break your back trying to carry
it. LOL!
